The Association’s purpose is to facilitate the creation of sustainable communities and invest in social capital in Guamote, Ecuador, in partnership with the Non-Government Organisation, Inti Sisa, (Sunflower) established in the region for a decade.

Initially, Education for Ecuador will provide educational support for girls and boys to enable them to attend school. The scheme will take affirmative action for the education of girls and young women, but suitable boys and young men are eligible to apply. Youth receiving support will be expected to engage in community service and it is a goal that they will then support the work of Inti Sisa, possibly through coaching in the Homework Group, the computer lab, or the Lodge and Tourism. Education will help combat malnutrition, develop an economy still dependent on subsistence farming, and increase especially the well being of women and children.

In an area where infant mortality is still high, where medical resources are limited and the birth rate much higher than the national average, education is proven to be one of the most significant factors in reducing the birth rate and improving infant mortality and thus contributing indirectly to maternal health.

The long term goals are:

All funding from Education for Ecuador will be awarded in the name of an Australian woman, Patricia Eileen Monaghan (née West). Her siblings, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren can think of no better way to honour her and enshrine her memory.

When the Guamote community no longer needs outside aid, Education for Ecuador will seek another Project needing similar support. In the event of the Trust and the Association being wound up, all money in hand will go to a suitable charity, nominated by the Trustees.

No Trustee, founder, member of the Association or donors to the Association may benefit financially from Education to Ecuador.
